Radio listeners haven’t heard voices like Omar Qureshi and Jamshed Marker who were ace cricket commentators of Radio Pakistan who used to give a running commentary on Test Matches between 1950 and 1966. They had a rare command over English language. Many Radio listeners of our generation corrected their English language pronunciation by listening to them. It was a treat to listen to them. Omar was basically a journalist of English language. Jamshed belonged to a trading Parsi family of Karachi who later on joined office and served as Pakistan ‘s Ambassador in many countries too. He also wrote a book covering his Diplomatic Career
After the advent of telly, radio commentary of cricket matches faded away.
Omar Qureshi and Jamshed Marker belonged to the club of Cricket Commentators which included like England’s John Arlot.
Needless to say they too had a big role in popularizing Cricket in Pakistan, particularly among the students. They described the Cricket match in such a detail that their listeners felt as if they were witnessing the game with their own eyes sitting in the pavilion.
