WNAM REPORT: Indonesia is blessed with abundant resources essential for producing and utilizing hydrogen to support the growth of national strategic industries, according to Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
Speaking during the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit and Exhibition 2025 in Jakarta on Tuesday, Lahadalia emphasized that the development of hydrogen aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s push for downstreaming efforts on natural resources to achieve self-sufficiency in energy.
“We have three key materials needed for hydrogen production: coal, gas, and water,” he noted, adding that Indonesia ranks sixth in the world in terms of coal reserves.
The minister further stated that Indonesia is expected to double its gas production rate within the next decade.
“I will strive to direct the use of new gas wells to meet the demands of the domestic market and support downstreaming efforts, including producing hydrogen,” he affirmed.
He also highlighted that as the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia has abundant water resources essential for hydrogen production.
Furthermore, Lahadalia underscored hydrogen’s potential as an alternative fuel source in the transportation sector.
However, he acknowledged the challenge posed by the growing popularity of electric vehicles to the development of the ecosystem of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
On the same occasion, ESDM Ministry’s Director General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, shared that the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit and Exhibition 2025 would run for three days.
She noted that the event draws participation from 23 exhibitors representing 10 countries.
She remarked that during the summit and exhibition, visitors can take a closer look at various hydrogen-powered vehicles, including cars, golf carts, forklifts, motorcycles, and drones.
“We aim to attract over 10 thousand visitors in the next three days,” the official remarked.
