Eighty years have passed since the end of World War II. Despite the decades that have gone by, its history, the suffering it caused, and the hardships it brought are not forgotten. On the contrary, the horrors of war are a constant reminder of the value of peace and tranquility. The Day of Remembrance and Honor, observed on May 9, carries this profound meaning.
On this day, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Victory Park and participated in a commemorative ceremony.
Throughout the park, solemn melodies could be heard. Every monument, symbol, and inscription at this site reflects the tragic truth of war and highlights the enormous contribution of our people to the Victory. The park is especially crowded on days of remembrance like today.
Following the tradition of recent years, the Head of State laid a wreath at the Ode to Fortitude Monument. This majestic memorial symbolizes the suffering, hardship, courage, and losses endured by our people during the war years.
According to archival records, nearly 2 million people out of a total population of 6.8 million took part in the bloody battles against fascism. Of these, approximately 540,000 were killed, 158,000 went missing, more than 50,000 died from unbearable torture in concentration camps, and over 60,000 returned from the front with disabilities.
The bravery of Uzbek soldiers and officers is reflected in the fact that 214,000 were awarded military orders and medals.
During the war years, our country became a reliable rear base for the front lines, supplying massive volumes of equipment, weapons, clothing, and food. Despite the harshest conditions, the Uzbek people welcomed with open hearts around 1.5 million evacuees from war zones, including 250,000 orphans.
“All of this is a chronicle of true courage and heroism. We have every right to be proud of our brave people who made a worthy contribution to such a difficult and glorious Victory. This heroism must never be forgotten. We must pass these facts on to the younger generation. It is vital in today’s troubling times. We must be ready daily to defend our Motherland”, Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan of February 19, the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II and the Day of Remembrance and Honor are being widely commemorated throughout the country. With deep respect, the nation remembers those who gave their lives for the peaceful future of generations to come. Special attention and care are shown to living veterans of labor and elderly citizens.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Armed Forces, government, and public organizations, mahalla activists, and respected elders. Participants laid flowers at the monument.
The Head of State also viewed the “Light of Memory” installation located in the park. This composition is dedicated to the heroism of the people of Uzbekistan who fought on the front lines and worked on the home front. The monument, designed as two soaring birds, symbolizes the continuity of generations.
The installation merges historical heritage with contemporary art. Visitors can learn more about the memorial complex and the war heroes using a QR code placed on the monument and download the book “Light of Memory”.
