WNAM REPORT: Indonesia emphasized the importance of ethical implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) during the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Indonesia’s position at the APEC Summit aligns with the theme “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper,” which reflects a shared commitment among APEC members to create a better future for the next generations.
“Indonesia’s position is to promote inclusive digitalization and support for MSMEs. In addition, regarding AI, Indonesia is promoting human-centered AI,” Hartarto stated.
The term “human-centered AI” refers to an approach to artificial intelligence development that places humans at the core of decision-making, ensuring ethical and responsible use of AI.
“Human-centered AI means that human intervention remains within the loop. This approach is becoming crucial because it prioritizes ethics over mere technological advancement,” he explained.
Hartarto said the human intervention aspect in AI development is consistent with the “innovate” theme, which highlights digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and human resource capacity building.
On the “connect” aspect, he said Indonesia will engage in diplomacy to strengthen inclusive digitalization for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by emphasizing policies on trade, investment, and global supply chain cooperation.
“Furthermore, Indonesia will also promote food and energy security, as well as the creative economy as a driver of growth,” he added.
Meanwhile, the “prosper” theme relates to efforts toward carbon neutrality, food security, social inclusion, and addressing challenges posed by aging populations, Hartarto noted.
Indonesia also urged stronger trust and economic resilience among nations through practical cooperation to maintain stability and sustainability across the region.
