WNAM REPORT: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has formally established “Majlis-e-Fikr-o-Adab” to promote academic, intellectual and literary activities. The inaugural ceremony of this scholarly and intellectual forum was officiated by the Dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Prof. Dr. Shah Mohyuddin Hashmi.
The primary objective of the Majlis is to provide teachers, researchers and students with an effective, organized and sustainable platform for intellectual dialogue, research discussions and creative and literary pursuits, fostering serious and meaningful discourse on various aspects of knowledge, thought and civilization.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor Dr. Shah Mohyuddin Hashmi stated that Majlis-e-Fikr-o-Adab would play a vital role in strengthening the academic, intellectual and cultural identity of the university. He expressed concern that contemporary universities have become overly focused on student numbers, rankings and outward indicators of success, whereas their true mandate extends beyond awarding degrees and diplomas to addressing national, intellectual and complex societal challenges.
He stressed the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach to meet these challenges and highlighted the need to cultivate intellectuals capable of providing thoughtful guidance to society. He added that the faculty members of AIOU possess this potential to a considerable extent.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Hafiz Tahir Islam noted that the forum would serve as a space to discuss creative and intellectual endeavors, critically review academic and literary masterpieces, explore new and original ideas, encourage researchers and authors and promote a culture of scholarly dialogue.
The Majlis-e-Fikr-o-Adab has been established by the Department of Islamic Thought, History and Culture. On the occasion, Chairman of the Department, Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Sajjad stated that the Majlis would organize various academic and intellectual programs, lectures, seminars and discussions in the future, contributing to a stronger and more dynamic academic and literary environment at AIOU.
