KUALA LUMPUR ( WNAM MONITORING): Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is strengthening its presence in Malaysia’s fast-evolving imaging market, driven by growing demand from hybrid content creators producing still photography, short-form videos, livestreams and commercial content.
Leveraging this emerging trend in the digitally connected creator community, Canon Malaysia is cementing Malaysia as an important market for the brand in Southeast Asia.
Canon Malaysia head of image communication business division Edward Chang said creators today move between stills, short-form video and livestreaming, and the brand emphasises helping them start and grow with the system, not just selling a camera.
“This means hands-on experiences, practical workshops and guidance in creator-friendly formats, supported by our retail and service partners nationwide.
“Our hybrid EOS R and PowerShot ranges are designed with this way of working in mind.
“Beyond the purchase, we stand behind every creator with strong post-sales support, whereby Canon is the only camera brand in Malaysia to offer a three-year warranty on most products, backed by in-house professional technicians for servicing and Canon Professional Services for professional users,“ Chang told SunBiz.
Furthermore, he said, professional users, including photographers, videographers and content creators, are increasingly seeking smaller, more agile equipment without compromising reliability.
Features such as subject-priority autofocus and effective in-body image stabilisation allow wedding photographers, event videographers and corporate teams to work more flexibly, including using Canon cameras as secondary equipment alongside their main systems.
“Canon supports these professionals through its Canon Professional Services Programme and dedicated engagement initiatives, helping them maintain operational reliability and confidence in their work,“ Chang said.
While noting that competition in mirrorless cameras is intensifying, especially in the compact hybrid-creator category, Chang said Canon Malaysia believes it comes down to the overall experience rather than any single feature.
“Reliable autofocus and Canon’s colour science help creators work confidently on their own. The RF system offers a clear path from compact lenses to professional optics. Local service support and our community programmes help customers keep creating with confidence.”
Chang highlighted the brand’s latest model, the EOS R8 Mark II, which brings technologies typically associated with higher-end models – such as in-body stabilisation, advanced autofocus and 6K-oversampled 4K – to a compact full-frame body.
He said, “Our approach is to make full-frame easier to step into. The EOS R8 Mark II brings advanced autofocus, in-body stabilisation and high-quality video into a compact body, which suits enthusiasts moving up from APS-C or smartphones.
“We pair this with a growing RF lens line-up and hands-on experiences across Malaysia, so customers can try the system and learn to get the most from it.”
Beyond the EOS R8 Mark II, Canon designs its cameras around different needs and preferences, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
The EOS R8 Mark II makes full frame more accessible to those stepping up, higher-end EOS R models cater to demanding professional photography, and Cinema EOS is built for film and video production.
Chang said Canon offers a camera for individuals and enthusiasts – whether they are just starting out or working professionally – and they can move up within the same Canon system as their needs grow.
He acknowledged that the imaging industry is under pressure from increasingly capable smartphones and that dedicated cameras must justify their premium through image quality, workflow advantages and specialised capabilities.
“For many people, it is the natural next step after a smartphone. Smartphones are very capable, but a dedicated camera offers a significantly larger sensor, interchangeable RF lenses and flexible RAW and log workflows.
“Physical controls and a viewfinder also make longer shoots more comfortable. Together, these give creators greater control over their images and room to grow,” Chang said.
“We believe it comes down to the overall experience rather than any single feature. Reliable autofocus and Canon’s colour science help creators work confidently on their own.
“The RF system offers a clear path from compact lenses to professional optics. Local service support and our community programmes help customers keep creating with confidence.”
Canon Malaysia will assess the success of its strategy over the next two to three years by looking at the overall health of its imaging ecosystem, including the number of customers moving into full-frame cameras, their continued investment in its RF lens system, and engagement within its creator and professional communities.
“Feedback gathered through events and service channels would also help the brand refine its approach and shape its strategy in the coming years,“ Chang said.
Looking ahead, he said as demand for versatile imaging solutions continues to evolve, Canon Malaysia’s ability to combine product innovation with a comprehensive lens line-up, hands-on learning opportunities and reliable after-sales support will be key to sustaining its competitiveness and deepening its foothold in Malaysia’s imaging market.
