Jakarta: Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ’s) order for Israel to immediately cease its offensive in Rafah City, the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
“Indonesia supports the ICJ’s ruling ordering Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah,” the ministry stated through its social media account on Sunday (May 26).
The Foreign Ministry welcomed the court’s order for Israel to ensure unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip for any commission of inquiry, fact-finding mission, and other investigative body to prove the allegations of genocide perpetrated by Israel.
The ministry urged Israel to immediately comply with the measures ordered by the court without reservation.
It also highlighted the critical role of the United Nations Security Council to ensure the ICJ’s order on Israel is implemented.
The ICJ, on Friday (May 24), issued the additional provisional measures requested by South Africa in the genocide case against Israel, ordering it to halt its offensive in Rafah.
“Israel must immediately hold its military offensive or any other action in the Rafah Governorate that may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” ICJ President Nawaf Salam read the court order.
The ICJ said the modification to its March 28 order was in view of the change of circumstances due to Israel’s offensive in Rafah. The city has harbored displaced Palestinians seeking refuge from Israel’s attack in the Gaza Strip since October 2023.
According to UN agencies, more than 800 thousand have since fled the city due to the ground invasion.
“The situation has worsened since the last orders issued on January 26 and March 28,” Salam stated.
