ISSI signs Working Protocol with Myanmar Think-Tank MISIS

ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT):  The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS)  signed a Working Protocol aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between the two think-tanks. The virtual signing ceremony marks a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation on both sides. The event was attended by the Myanmar Ambassador in Islamabad and the Pakistan’s Cd’A in Yangoon.

Dr. Khurram Abbas, Director of the India Study Centre at ISSI, moderated the event, who highlighted that this Protocol is a testament to the commitment of both institutions to develop joint research and promote policy advisory on issues of mutual interest.

In his remarks, DG ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood emphasized the importance of this collaboration, particularly in the wake of rapidly evolving international landscape. He noted that robust research, informed analysis, and scholarly cooperation are essential in understanding global changes and their impacts. Furthermore, he underlined Pakistan’s long-standing relationship with Myanmar, noting that the two countries share decades of cooperation across diplomatic, economic, security, and cultural spheres. Additionally, he stated that the Protocol is part of ISSI’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with think-tanks in ASEAN member states, and lauded the valuable contributions of the Embassies in Islamabad and Yangoon to the establishment of ASEAN Corner at ISSI.

Ambassador U Thant Kyaw, Chairman of MISIS, expressed gratitude to all those involved in bringing this Protocol to fruition. He stressed that it symbolizes mutual respect and trust, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation and joint research endeavors.

Myanmar’s Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Wunna Han, described the signing as a milestone in the relationship between the two sides. He noted that this Protocol will further promote collaborative research projects, serving as a positive reflection of Pakistan-Myanmar relations. Ambassador Han also recognized the crucial role that think-tanks like ISSI and MISIS play in shaping future policy directions.
Pakistan’s Chargé d´Affaires in Yangoon, Mr. Anwar Zeb, reiterated the commitment of the Pakistan Mission to support collaboration between ISSI and MISIS. He highlighted the importance of think-tank cooperation in advancing the development of cordial bilateral relations and assured continued support for future joint initiatives.

The Protocol sets forth a framework for collaborative activities, including the exchange of researchers and data, joint events, and programs, as well as the initiation of research projects on pressing regional issues. Both institutions agreed to designate focal persons for coordinating follow-up on collaborative projects and sharing relevant publications.

The signing ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of mutual commitment to explore new avenues for academic and research cooperation, contributing to a deeper understanding of regional and international issues.
