WNAM REPORT: South Korea’s oceans ministry on Thursday announced a plan for the country to become the world’s top exporter of oysters by 2030, as part of efforts to diversify its trade portfolio.
Under the vision, South Korea aims to export US$160 million worth of oysters in 2030, significantly up from the $80 million recorded in 2023, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
“Oysters are enjoyed by consumers around the globe, with the global market standing at $600 million as of 2022,” the oceans ministry said, noting South Korea is currently the third-largest exporter.
France ranks first with oyster exports valued at $140 million, followed by China with $120 million, the ministry’s data showed.
To achieve the target, the oceans ministry said it plans to establish a specialized zone for oyster production, including processing facilities.
The government will also assist oyster farms in adopting automated and smart production technologies to improve efficiency.
South Korea also plans to promote new recipes for oyster consumption, while supporting the production and marketing efforts of food companies.
“The measures will help the country produce high-quality oysters through automated and smart technologies, moving beyond the traditional oyster industry and eventually becoming the world’s leading exporter,” Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
Earlier it was reported that South Korea’s childbirths rose by highest rate in 14 years in October 2024.
