WEB DESK: Almaty hosts today the 5th EU-Central Asia Civil Society Forum being attended by more than 150 representatives from EU institutions, UN agencies, regional governments, and civil society organizations (CSOs).

The three-day event is organized by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in the framework of the EU Civil Society Facility for Central Asia funded by the European Union (EU).

The forum agenda includes “critical issues shaping the region’s future, such as digital transformation, climate change, youth participation, and women’s empowerment.”

“This four-year initiative aims to empower CSOs across Central Asia by fostering collaboration and advancing their role in promoting their active participation in regional decision-making to ensure good governance and sustainable development,” the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan says.

The event is called to become a vital platform for dialogue, offering participants the opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate on advancing the EU Central Asia Strategy and the Global Gateway priorities.

Aleška Simkić, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan, highlighted the importance of civil society in advancing democratic governance and sustainable development.

Addressing the participants, she said that the EU is committed to strengthening its relationship with Central Asia and supporting the invaluable work of civil society in fostering regional stability, social inclusion, and sustainable development.

“Through collaboration, we can address the most pressing challenges of our time, from digital transformation to climate change, while empowering youth and women to play an active role in shaping their futures,” Aleška Simkić noted.

Roman Vassilenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, emphasized Kazakhstan’s commitment to supporting civil society initiatives and regional cooperation:

“Kazakhstan views civil society as an essential partner in our development agenda. This Forum provides a platform for constructive dialogue between CSOs and governments to align our goals and work together towards a more prosperous and inclusive Central Asia,” Vassilenko stated.

Gurel Gurkan, Director a.i. of UNOPS Austria Multi-Country Office, underscored the key role of civil society in driving sustainable change.

“At UNOPS, we believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to solve complex development challenges. Civil society is at the forefront of this work, driving positive change on the ground. Through our partnerships, we seek to enhance the capabilities of civil society in order to promote inclusive development in Central Asia and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This Forum provides a unique opportunity to share knowledge, build partnerships, and accelerate progress on issues that matter most to people in this region.”

Over the next two days, the event will feature thematic group discussions, focused workshops led by the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), and networking opportunities for participants to exchange ideas and deepen their engagement on key regional issues.

Earlier, it was reported that Kazakhstan ranks first among Central Asian countries in average wages.
