Ternate ( WNAM MONITORING ): Mount Dukono in Indonesia’s North Maluku erupted again on Sunday at 5:45 a.m. local time (GMT+9), spewing volcanic ash up to 3,000 meters above its summit.
Bambang Sugiono, an officer at the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in North Halmahera, said the ash column was observed to be white to gray in color, with thick intensity, drifting toward the southwest and northwest.
The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 33 mm and a duration of 129.66 seconds. The volcano, which stands 1,087 meters above sea level, is currently at Level II (Alert) status, he said.
Sugiono advised residents to avoid climbing or approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.
“The warning is due to ongoing periodic ash eruptions; ash distribution depends on wind direction, making affected areas variable,” he explained.
He also urged residents to keep masks or face coverings on hand to protect against the health risks posed by volcanic ash inhalation.
