WNAM REPORT: Indonesians visiting Osaka, Japan, can now use the Quick Response Indonesian Standard (QRIS), a digital payment system developed and implemented by Bank Indonesia.
QRIS is available at several tenants in the Indonesian Pavilion in Osaka after its official launch by Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo in Jakarta on Monday, which was broadcast live in Osaka.
“This is a historic moment. It marks a new chapter in closer cooperation between Indonesia and Japan through digital technology. Today, the QRIS cross-border system between Indonesia and Japan begins,” Warjiyo said.
The use of QRIS in Japan is the first outside ASEAN, making Bank Indonesia’s initiative a significant breakthrough in the digital finance sector.
The presence of QRIS is expected to facilitate transactions for Indonesian tourists in Japan and Japanese visitors to Indonesia. Indonesian tourist arrivals in Japan exceed 500,000 per year.
“With just a smartphone, going anywhere, whether Shibuya, Shinjuku, or even to a restaurant, will be easier. QRIS can be used starting today,” Warjiyo added.
In Osaka, the implementation was marked by Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta purchasing clothing from Indonesian MSMEs at the Indonesian Pavilion, witnessed by Japanese government representatives and other guests.
“Sir, I bought this shirt with QRIS. Here’s the proof,” Hendarta said, showing the digital receipt to the Governor of Bank Indonesia.
The Indonesian Pavilion also showcased MSME products including clothing, woven fabrics, packaged foods, coffee, rendang rice, and packaged tea.
The QRIS launch in Japan took place on August 17, 2025, led by the Governor of Bank Indonesia, with the aim of expanding development to make transactions between the two countries more seamless.
