WNAM MONITORING: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Tashkent State Agrarian University (TSAU), organized the “Green Science and Innovation Day” in Uzbekistan.

The event gathered around 200 participants – including youth, scientists, policymakers, civil society, and private sector representatives – to showcase innovative solutions and scientific advances that are transforming agrifood systems towards a greener future.

The initiative aligned with Uzbekistan’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy”, reaffirming the country’s strong commitment to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental pollution, and unsustainable farming practices. It also built upon global and regional efforts, including the Regional Technical Platform on Green Agriculture, the FAO Science and Innovation Forum, and the Regional Science and Innovation Week for Europe and Central Asia. These initiatives highlight the crucial role of science and innovation in developing resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agrifood systems.

Participants explored a wide range of cutting-edge initiatives and technologies. Presentations included the “Agroplatform” information system by the Center for Digitization of Agro-Industry under the Ministry of Agriculture, sustainable plant protection methods based on biocontrol from TSAU, and the application of space technology and drones in agriculture by Uzbekspace. FAO Uzbekistan shared its experiences in applying science and innovation in practice, while UN Volunteers emphasized the importance of volunteerism and youth engagement in advancing green approaches.

Interactive activities, including a knowledge quiz on green science, innovation, and FAO initiatives, encouraged active participation of youth and reinforced learning in an engaging format. Winners were recognized during the closing session.

As noted, ensuring food security occupies a central place in FAO’s mandate, where the protection and sustainable use of land resources play a crucial role. Sustainable land management, based on innovative methods, contributes to improving the nutritional value of agricultural products, while also supporting adaptation to and mitigation of climate change impacts. The Green Science and Innovation Day further strengthens knowledge-sharing and evidence-based decision-making at national and local levels, serving to mobilize partnerships and resources for sustainable agriculture and environmental protection in Uzbekistan.
