There has been a visible decline in the quality of debate in our Parliament whether it is NA, Senate or Provincial Assemblies .Gone are the days when it was a treat to listen to the speeches of parliamentarians delivered by them on the floor of the House by sitting in the visitors gallery of the Assemblies .The focus of their speeches used to be on issues rather character assassination of their political adversaries. Many of them were well read persons like Mumtaz Daultana ,Hussain Shaheed suharwardy, Z A Bhutto and Khan Abdul Wali Khan, to mention a few who had also personal libraries of their own containing thousands of books on all the subjects under the sun.
No doubt they too used sardonic words against their political opponents in their speeches but they never indulged in obscene language euphemistically called as unparliamentary language. They came to the Assemblies well prepared in order to make the assembly sessions meaningful.
It is a pity that since long the best of the best politicians no longer are coming to Parliament. In
England only the cream of the society could make it to the House of Commons.
The speeches which its MPs make in the House of Commons are considered as a piece of literature that is why they are published every month in the form of a book billed as Hansard.
We have been practicing parliamentary democracy in the country for a fairly long time in this country but what a pity our parliamentarians are devoid of setting up healthy political and parliamentary traditions instead of the art of using fisticuffs and shouting with the top of their voice against one another in which they excel and which they employ against one another quite frequently in order to cow down their political adversaries.
