Former Premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was not far wrong when he said the other day that all and sundry in the country know that persons get elected to the Senate by paying money.
Parliamentary democracy can deliver only if the political parties field those candidates for assemblies who are impeccably honest financially whether it is Senate, NA or PAs. What a pity that most of our so-called parliamentarians aren’t the best of the best people of society. About their general reputation the less said the better.
Our Assemblies are notorious for horse trading. Small wonder their track record of legislation for amelioration of the lot of commoners in different fields of life who don’t know where their next meal would come from is hopeless .The interest of the elite is close to their heart as they too belong to it.
It is precisely for this reason that a strong thinking is developing in some political circles of the country that a system analogous to the electoral system of proportional representation in vogue in some Scandinavian countries need to be introduced in this country too so that genuine representatives belonging to the class of the have- nots could reach assemblies as they alone can look after and legislate for the welfare of poor people of the country .
