Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING): Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto shared details of his 45-year friendship with the King of Malaysia, the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, during his visit to Malaysia.
“I and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong have been maintaining ties for a very long time–maybe 45 years. Our friendship dates back to our studies in the United States during our youth,” he told the media on Monday.
The President made the remarks at a press conference after a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, according to a statement released by his secretariat here.
Prabowo also highlighted his emotional connect with Malaysia, saying that he and his family once resided in the country during his school years.
“My family, my parents, were very close to the founding fathers of modern Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Razak. I have an emotional bond with Malaysia,” he said.
He added that he used to frequently visit Malaysia, but his position as the head of state has made it rather difficult for him to continue doing so due to the protocols and stringent security procedures involved.
“After becoming President, I find a visit more complicated, considering the protocol requirements and the need for many guards,” he said with a smile.
He then underscored that the close ties between Indonesia and Malaysia are rooted in their shared history, culture, and ethnicity, noting that some Malaysian leaders have relatives in Indonesia.
During his visit to the National Palace of Malaysia on the same day, Prabowo received the Darjah Kerabat Johor Yang Amat Dihormati Pangkat Pertama, or theMost Esteemed Royal Family Order of Johor.
Sultan Ibrahim conferred the award to the Indonesian head of state.
