Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING ): Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with UN Tourism members, plans to release investment guidelines focused on the green economy and environmental sustainability in the tourism sector.
The initiative is one of the key outcomes of the 37th Joint Commission Meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia, held in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“As part of this event, Indonesia, together with UN Tourism, will launch the Indonesian Tourism Guidelines,” said Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana.
She explained that the goal of these guidelines is to support the ongoing development of sustainable tourism in UN Tourism member countries. The initiative aims to provide economic benefits to local communities while also preserving natural and cultural resources.
“Let’s work together to make this event a success and play an active role in strengthening the tourism sector. Especially during times of global uncertainty, tourism can serve as a powerful driver of the global economy,” she said.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the importance of developing the tourism sector through thoughtful planning and collaboration.
“This is what we aim to plan together, and why meetings and networking like this are so essential,” he said.
He noted that tourism generates investment and creates job opportunities, which can in turn support the development of tourism schools. He cited the example of tourism school development in Cebu, the Philippines, as a model that could be replicated in Indonesia and other countries.
Pololikashvili highlighted the similarities between Indonesia and the Philippines in terms of their natural resources, cultural richness, and social dynamics.
“They both have Manila and Jakarta, but they also have Cebu and Bali. They share many islands and priorities—nature, people, culture, gastronomy, religion, adventure, and unique tourism products. These are the areas we want to develop together,” he said.
Meanwhile, CAP UN Tourism Chairperson from the Philippines, Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco, said her country is committed to building quality tourism.
She added that the Philippines government is open to international cooperation to unlock the full potential of its regional tourism assets while maintaining sustainability for future generations.
“Thank you again to Indonesia and UN Tourism. We look forward to many opportunities for collaboration in tourism investment, education, and the broader tourism economy,” she said.
