WNAM REPORT: The government continues to accelerate the construction of permanent housing for people whose homes were severely damaged or lost due to hydrometeorological disasters in the Sumatra region.

“The stage of temporary shelters is almost complete. We are now entering the phase of accelerating all permanent housing construction,” Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian said in a statement here on Friday.

The minister said the acceleration is aimed at ensuring that affected communities do not stay too long in temporary shelters.

He emphasized this while reviewing the permanent housing construction site in Dolok Nauli Village, Adian Koting Sub-district, North Tapanuli District, North Sumatra.

Furthermore, he explained that the permanent housing development adopts two schemes, namely in-situ and communal.

Under the in-situ scheme, residents can independently build houses in safe locations with financial assistance of Rp60 million from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), which will be disbursed in two stages.

In addition to self-construction, residents may also directly hand over the construction process to BNPB.

Meanwhile, under the communal scheme, permanent housing is constructed within a designated complex on land provided by the regional government.

The construction process is carried out by the Ministry of Public Housing and Settlement Areas or through mutual cooperation with other ministries, institutions, and non-governmental parties.

The permanent housing development in Dolok Nauli Village is an example of the communal scheme, supported by a non-governmental organization, the Buddha Tzu Chi Foundation.

He noted that the foundation is building a total of 2,603 units across three affected provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

The details are 1,000 units in Aceh, 1,103 units in North Sumatra, and 500 units in West Sumatra.
