Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING): President Prabowo Subianto has ordered Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to immediately secure alternative energy sources to strengthen national energy security.
A key part of this initiative involves accelerating the transition from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to compressed natural gas (CNG).
Speaking at a press conference following a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening, Lahadalia explained that the push for alternative energy is driven by volatile global geopolitical developments.
“We held a meeting to discuss the energy and downstream sectors,” Lahadalia said. “Geopolitical developments are ongoing, and the President has ordered an immediate search for alternative energy sources.”
He emphasized that the primary focus of this transition would be the shift from LPG to CNG.
During the meeting, President Prabowo also received updates on the reorganization of mining permits, fuel availability, and the national electricity supply.
Regarding fuel, Lahadalia reassured the public that the government will maintain current prices for subsidized fuel and subsidized LPG to protect public purchasing power amid global economic challenges.
“We can confirm that the prices of subsidized fuel and LPG remain unchanged for now,” Lahadalia stated. “Meanwhile, non-subsidized fuel prices will continue to be adjusted in line with market fluctuations.”
He further noted that this pricing strategy ensures lower-income communities remain shielded while allowing market rates to apply to higher-income consumers.
“We are exploring all alternatives,” he said. “Our priority is to protect lower-income families. Non-subsidized consumers are those with significantly better economic capabilities.”
Addressing the electricity supply from state utility company PLN, Lahadalia dismissed rumors of shortages, confirming that national coal stocks—the backbone of local power plants—remain secure.
“Claims of a coal scarcity are untrue, as our allocation has reached 170 million tons,” Lahadalia said.
He added that the government is moving quickly to resolve minor mechanical issues reported by PLN to prevent future power outages, which have recently affected several regions.
