WNAM MONITORING: Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto said Thursday that several world leaders have reached out to congratulate him on his apparent victory in Wednesday’s election, despite official results from the vote counting yet to be published.
Quick count results from all major pollsters, each sampling from 2,000 polling stations, suggest that Prabowo is on track to secure the presidency with 57-59 percent of the vote. Interim results from the ongoing vote tally by the General Election Commission (KPU) also align with the independent quick counts.
“This morning, I received phone calls from several heads of states congratulating me on the ongoing election results,” Prabowo shared on his official X account.
He mentioned the callers as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“Praise be to God. We are truly grateful and eagerly await the official tally from the KPU [General Election Commission],” he added.
If the current results hold, Prabowo is set to be inaugurated as Indonesia’s eighth president on October 20.
The defense minister has made three attempts to secure the presidency and was defeated in the first two by Joko Widodo.
