WNAM MONITORING: Turkmenistan has been elected chair of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) for 2027-2028, with Azerbaijan as vice-chair.
It is noted that the corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the group at the level of permanent representatives to the UN in New York.
Laos, Burundi, Chad, Rwanda, and Paraguay were also elected to the steering bureau from regional groups.
The chairmanship will allow Turkmenistan (with its term starting on January 1, 2027) to coordinate the group’s activities for two years, including in the country’s priority areas of energy and transport connectivity, representing the interests of 32 landlocked developing countries.
It is specified that the composition of the steering bureau will also be approved by the final declaration of the LLDCs ministerial meeting, which will be held on September 24, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York.
In November–December of this year, together with the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), it is planned to prepare a draft roadmap for Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the group for 2027-2028.
