BAKU ( WNAM MONITORING): Today marks the anniversary of the liberation of Baku by the Caucasian Islamic Army from Armenian‑Bolshevik forces. 108 years have passed since the capital’s liberation.
On September 15, 1918, Azerbaijani and Turkish soldiers freed Baku from Bolshevik‑Dashnak occupation, inscribing a proud day in Azerbaijan’s history.
This victory ended Armenian and Bolshevik dominance in Baku and surrounding districts, securing Azerbaijan’s independence.
Although Azerbaijan declared independence in May 1918, parts of its territory, including Baku, remained under occupation. The young republic lacked sufficient means to ensure territorial integrity. Despite its own difficult situation, Ottoman Türkiye sent troops under Nuru Pasha to support Azerbaijan. In August–September 1918, Turkish forces fulfilled this historic mission despite European objections.
On September 15, the Caucasian Islamic Army and Azerbaijani Corps liberated Baku. Following this event, the capital of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was moved from Ganja to Baku.
