Baku: A high-level roundtable dedicated to the 28th and 29th sessions of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28 and COP29) has been held at the headquarters of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Representing Azerbaijan at the meeting was Yalchin Rafiyev, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP29 Lead Negotiator. The gathering welcomed global climate and energy leaders, official representatives, and diplomats from various countries.
Highlighting the meeting`s key goals, Executive Director of the IEA Fatih Birol emphasized that today, the world`s attention is focused on Azerbaijan.
The event featured addresses from U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, French former COP21 President Laurent Fabius, COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev, as well as climate representatives of the UN, Brazil, Denmark, and Germany.
In his remark, COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev highlighted Azerbaijan`s unique position as a recognized center of multiculturalism, bridging North and South. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s suitability as an ideal location to drive progress in COP29 negotiations. Rafiyev stressed the importance of international cooperation with the UN and other global entities to achieve climate change objectives. He noted that only through inclusive COP discussions can transformative solutions be achieved, described it as one of Azerbaijan`s guiding principles.
