The weather pundits were hundred percent correct when last year they predicted that winter in Pakistan in2003-2004 would be of a longer duration. It is third week of March 2004 and we see no sign, whatever, of spring which in the past normally started by 16th February every year. It seems winter has eaten up spring this year.
The weather pundits now predict that this year is going to be hotter than last year and apprehension is that massive glaciers in the northern areas of the country would melt thus causing heavy floods in the plains of the country on a massive scale. They also predict heavy rainfall.
The government had better take time by the forelock and undertake all essential precautionary steps in time to minimize as much as possible the damage likely to occur to the physical infrastructure like roads, railway lines, government and private buildings due to heavy downpours and floods so that it is not caught napping by the floods.
