Washington: “Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29 is an important achievement for the country and a demonstration of its strong commitment to climate action,” the UN press service said in response to an inquiry.
“The UN is providing system-wide support to the COP29 Presidency. The UN Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat is providing technical support to the COP29 Presidency team on aspects of negotiations, operations (such as conference management and logistics), and stakeholder engagement. In addition, UNFCCC, with other UN entities, is coordinating capacity-building support to the COP29 Presidency team and other Parties, including on conducting negotiations,” the UN said.
“Additionally, the UN has established a Global UN COP29 Task Force, co-chaired by the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition, Selwin Hart, and the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva.
The Global Task Force brings together around 25 UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes to provide coordinated technical support to the COP29 Presidency Initiatives that are being launched in the coming weeks.
At the country-level, the UN team is engaging with all stakeholders to mobilize climate action in Azerbaijan. For example, the UN Azerbaijan, together with partners, has launched an initiative called the “29 Climate Conversations: The Road to COP29” to spark nationwide dialogue and action on climate change and just transition.
In addition, the UN country team is placing a particular focus on engaging with young people in Azerbaijan in the lead-up to and during COP29, aiming to inspire, educate, and mobilize youth from across the country to empower them to act and be part of climate solutions.”
