Time was when due attention used to be given to the promotion of soccer in the country and every year a number of football tournaments used to be held throughout the length and breadth of the country. No doubt our ranking in football wasn’t good but it wasn’t bad either. At Asian level our football team was among the first four teams of Asian countries Alas ,those responsible for the promotion of sports in the country didn’t patronize football the way they looked after cricket and hockey Neither did the private sponsors of sports patronize football.
The same goes for athletics too If we could produce the fastest athelete in 100 metres race in the shape of Abdul Khaliq who won for us gold medal as back as in the Tokyo Asian games of 1958, we could have fared good in other individual atheletic events like swimming boxing, wrestling high and long jump etc. had these been properly patronized also.
