In recent years, Azerbaijan and Dubai (UAE) have actively collaborated to boost tourism and enhance cultural exchange. Both destinations draw travelers with their rich cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, and stunning natural beauty.
Shahab Shayan, Regional Director for International Operations in the Asia-Pacific region at the Dubai Economy and Tourism Department, talked about the key aspects of tourism relations between Azerbaijan and Dubai.
In an interview with, Shahab Shayan highlighted the development trends in tourism, the significance of cultural exchange, and promising investment opportunities.
– How is cooperation between Azerbaijan and Dubai in the tourism sector developing?
– Currently, tourism relations between Dubai and Azerbaijan are developing in two directions: B2B and B2C. B2B includes flights between international airports and general tourist traffic. B2C includes campaigns like “Kids go free” and other online promotions aimed at attracting tourists.
Last year, the number of tourists from Azerbaijan to Dubai increased by 69% year-on-year, and this trend continues in 2024. In the first half of the year, the number of Azerbaijani tourists increased by 62% compared to the same period in 2023. This indicates the growing popularity of Dubai. Increasing number of direct flights between Baku and Dubai also contributes to strengthening cooperation.
– What cultural and touristic aspects of Azerbaijan interest the citizens of Dubai?
– While I cannot speak on behalf of all citizens of Dubai, I can say that I am particularly drawn to Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage and history. The country’s natural beauty is also very appealing. Additionally, the availability of halal food, the chance to experience snow in winter, and the opportunity to taste local cuisine make Azerbaijan an attractive destination for UAE citizens.
– How can Dubai’s experience help develop Azerbaijan’s tourism sector? Considering Dubai’s successful experiences, what steps can be taken to strengthen Azerbaijan’s position in the international tourism market?
– There has always been mutual interest and desire between Dubai and Azerbaijan. We have consistently supported the development of this interest and appreciate the ongoing growth of this relationship. The natural progression of these relations is very important to us.
First, it is essential to understand the market well and show determination for the continuous development of tourism relations. Efforts should be made to further strengthen and develop these relations from both marketing and other aspects. Relations between Azerbaijan and Dubai are progressing very well, with positive trends observed in this development.
One of Dubai’s main goals is to double its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). To achieve this, various investment opportunities are available, especially tools and instruments offered to investors.
For example, the Golden Visa initiative introduced a year ago, provides Azerbaijani citizens with a 10-year visa that allows them to live and invest in Dubai. There are other types of visas, such as the Investor Visa and Partner Visa. From our side, we are ready to provide all possible assistance and support to investors who want to invest in Dubai.
– What measures and strategies can be implemented to popularize Azerbaijani culture in Dubai?
To promote Azerbaijani culture in Dubai, it is crucial to focus on clearly defined goals and priorities. The identification and implementation of specific tools should be the responsibility of tourism agencies and the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan. The main issue is to understand Dubai’s goals for the near future and how Azerbaijan can integrate these goals into the development of cultural and tourism relations.
– How does Dubai ensure sustainable development in tourism sector, and what experiences can Azerbaijan apply?
– Dubai actively implements projects to ensure environmental sustainability in tourism. For example, preparations for COP28 included significant efforts to develop infrastructure and introduce environmentally responsible practices in the hotel and tourism sector.
Azerbaijan can adopt these practices, especially during COP29, and strengthen sustainable tourism in the country. We are ready to provide comprehensive support in this process.( Source: The Report )
