ISLAMABAD( WNAMREPORT): To address the illiteracy rate under the National Education Emergency, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood, inaugurated an Adult Literacy Center on campus. This center will provide basic education and skills training to individuals without formal schooling, with the initial focus on lower-grade university employees such as security guards, sanitary workers, gardeners, and peons. Dr. Tariq Cheema, CEO of Alight Pakistan, officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by various key figures from the education sector, including Dr. Muhammad Ajmal Chaudhry, Habibullah Khan, Syed Akbar Ali, and representatives from JICA.
During the event, Dr. Nasir emphasized that education is a basic human right and outlined plans to expand the center to university regional offices. The adult education program will extend to factory workers, farmers, and other uneducated adults across the country. Dr. Ajmal Chaudhry also announced the establishment of a research center within the literacy program to explore various aspects of adult education. The initiative was widely praised by the attendees, who pledged full support to its mission of raising the national literacy rate.
