Jakarta (WNAM MONITORING): Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto held a meeting with the President of Vietnam, Tô Lâm, in Hanoi on Saturday, during which he expressed Indonesia’s readiness to support Vietnam in responding to the impacts of Typhoon Yagi.
The meeting was part of Prabowo’s visit to Southeast Asia, according to a statement from his ministry.
“Indonesia is ready to assist in whatever capacity may be needed,” he said. “I hope those affected by the disaster are given the strength to begin the recovery process soon.”
Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, from September 7 to 12. According to local experts, the typhoon was Vietnam’s most powerful storm in the last three decades, with wind speeds reaching almost 150 kilometers per hour.
Data from local authorities show that, as of September 12, Yagi had claimed 199 lives, injured 800 people, and led to 128 people being reported missing. It also caused significant damage to several buildings, bridges, and key infrastructure.
During Saturday’s meeting, Prabowo expressed his concern and condolences on behalf of the Indonesian government and people to the Vietnamese president.
Prabowo arrived in Hanoi on Friday. In the capital city, he is also scheduled to meet Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman, Trần Thanh Mẫn, and Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính on Saturday.
