There is a lot of wisdom in this age old dictum that a judge should only speak through his written judgements. Those of them who violate this wisecrack often land themselves in trouble.
Lately it has been observed that during the proceedings in the court some presiding officers are prone to indulge unnecessarily in exchange of words with the defense counsels which could be avoided and more often than not through slip of the tongue such words come out of their mouth inadvertently which reveal their bent of mind about the cases under discussion from which it is not difficult for those sitting in the court room to know which side are they on and what is at the back of their mind about the case under review.
That is the precise reason why the old jurists have advised the sitting judges to refrain from indulging in undue discussions with the defence counsels during the course of case proceedings in the court. Experience of hindsight has revealed that whenever and wherever this piece of advice was flouted it landed the presiding officer of the court in trouble.
