Jakarta (WNAM MONITORING):  Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has said that it is applying policies to strike a balance between artificial intelligence (AI) use and its regulation to minimize potential risks.

“We are trying to maximize the use of AI and minimize the risks. This is the first approach that we are taking,” Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said at a discussion on “National AI Strategy: A Pro-Innovation Approach” here on Wednesday.

He affirmed that the Indonesian Government is continuing to develop strategies to utilize AI by maintaining a balance between encouraging technological innovation and carefully regulating its implementation.

Patria explained that with Internet connectivity reaching 97 percent in residential areas and Internet penetration reaching almost 80 percent of the total population, Indonesia is in a good position to respond to the development of AI technology.

However, he said, the biggest challenge is ensuring that the technology can be used in a way that provides maximum benefits without causing unwanted risks.

One of the steps taken by the ministry to address this has been the issuance of Circular Number 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics, which serves as a basis for the ethical and wise utilization of AI.

The circular underlines several fundamental things, including the importance of security in AI development and use.

Patria noted that the policies implemented also consider the risks associated with AI utilization, especially in critical sectors such as finance.

In such cases, the government is focusing on regulations that can lower the possibility of negative impacts, such as data errors or financial losses caused by uncontrolled AI applications.

The policies are also aimed at creating clear norms regarding the utilization of AI without impeding innovation that is developing rapidly.

“With dynamic regulations and concern for the development of digital talents, Indonesia is determined to be an active player in the global AI ecosystem,” he added.

In terms of AI policies and regulations, the government is also continuing to monitor the developments globally.

Patria emphasized that Indonesia does not only want to be a consumer of AI technology but also a significant player, especially in Asia.
