Dilip Kumar has rightly been declared as the king of Tragedy by film critics though it doesn’t mean that his roles as a comedian were in any way inferior than his tragedy roles. His comic acting in films like Ram and Shiyam was as impressive and captivating as his tragedy roles in films like , Deedar and Devdas and Babul to mention a few. In a film career spanned over almost 60 years he worked in only 60 films which wax eloquent of the fact that he believed more in quality rather than quantity. Born on 11 December 1922 in Peshawar city he joined the great majority two years back.
Had he been alive today he would be over 100 today. The cinegoers of Peshawar are unhappy over the fact that the provincial government of KPK has yet to translate into reality its decision taken a couple of years back to buy his house in Peshawar city he was born for converting it into a national heritage museum,
Inordinate delay has occurred in the matter.
Dilip was a man of principles When Mehboob Khan selecting team for his super hit film, Mother India he offered Dilip role of son of Nargis to Dilip which Dilip declined on the plea that cinegoers had been seeing him in romantic roles with Nargis in dozen of films therefore it would appear odd to them to see him in the role of her son.
After his refusal Mehboob offered that role to Sunil Dutt. Actors like him are a rare commodity who are born once in a blue moon.
