WEB DESK: A team of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency said it sent a team of inspectors to Ukraine to assess the condition of seven electrical substations connected to the country’s nuclear power plants.
“An IAEA team is in Ukraine this week,” the agency said on X.
The inspectors will assess seven electrical substations on which the country’s NPPs allegedly “depend to safely generate electricity,” according to the post.
The IAEA reported on December 13 that five of Ukraine’s nine active nuclear reactors had reduced power generation following Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces carried out precision strikes on Ukraine’s critical fuel and energy sites that support the country’s defense industry, as retaliation for an attack with ATACMS missiles on a military airfield in Russia’s Taganrog.
The Russian envoy to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, previously told the IAEA Board of Governors that Moscow had not attacked and was not attacking nuclear power plants, nor was it carrying out any actions that could create nuclear risks. According to the diplomat, strikes against military targets and the energy infrastructure that feeds them are absolutely legitimate.
