WNAM REPORT: Majilis deputies have ratified the international treaties between the Government of Kazakhstan and the UN.
The documents provide for participation of Kazakhstan Armed Forces’ Peacekeeping Contingent in the mission on the Golan Heights.
According to Deputy Minister of Defense Shaikh-Khassan Zhazykbayev, the treaties were signed in accordance with the Parliament’s resolution dated January 19, 2024 “ On the proposal from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to send a peacekeeping contingent of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan to participate in the United Nation’s missions.”
“The main Memorandum, setting the administrative, logistical and financial conditions for sending Kazakhstani personnel and property to join the mission, was signed on February 14, 2024. This is a standard document for all countries sending their forces to participate in peacekeeping operations,” says Shaikh-Khassan Zhazykbayev.
In his words, today the national peacekeeping contingent which includes 139 military personnel and 26 units of military equipment has been deployed in the mission on the Golan Heights since March 2024.
In accordance with the Law “On Peacekeeping Activities of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, the funds allocated by the UN as a compensation go into the republican budget.
He added that an additional agreement to the Memorandum was concluded with the UN. It took nine months to adjust the draft document with the UN Secretariat, and the document was signed in late 2024.
The agreement provides for division of payments from the UN into two bank accounts. Thus, the money for the personnel is paid directly to the the military personnel, and the money for the property will go into the state budget. Given that these international treaties concern the maintenance of international peace and security, and also set other rules than those stipulated by the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan, they are subject to ratification,” he said.
He emphasized that Kazakhstan’s contribution to ensuring international and regional security through the participation in the UN peacekeeping missions will enhance the country’s prestige.
