Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING): Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Stella Christie, has asked ASEAN to design an education policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

“Responding to the development of artificial intelligence, ASEAN needs to design an education policy related to the aspects of readiness and responsibility in the implementation of AI,” she said at the 1st Regional Policy Convening of AI Ready ASEAN at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

In the design of the policy, ASEAN will also need to strengthen good public literacy about AI, she added.

Literacy, in this case, does not only mean that someone knows about the existence of AI, but also includes three other aspects.

First, everyone must be able to evaluate whether a problem can be solved with AI or must be done with human intervention.

Second, everyone must be able to explain why AI cannot be used to solve certain problems.

“Third, be able to make certain plans that combine aspects of AI and humans to solve problems,” Christie, who is a professor of cognitive psychology, added.

The Indonesian Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology is supporting various program initiatives carried out by the ASEAN Foundation through the AI Ready ASEAN program.

She expressed the hope that the massive and responsible use of AI can improve the capabilities of academics in Indonesian higher education as well as help prepare young talents, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Themed “Fostering the Opportunities of Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy AI in the Region,” the 1st Regional Policy Convening of AI Ready ASEAN sought to bring together policy makers, AI practitioners, as well as representatives of ASEAN states to discuss the issue.

AI Ready ASEAN is a program that aims to increase the involvement of young people, educators, and parents in promoting the responsible use of AI.

The program, which is supported by Google, includes regional campaigns to highlight AI as a critical skill for the future, with the aim of increasing basic AI literacy among a wider audience.
