WNAM Monitoring: The Kazakh Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry summed up water provision and international agreements issues.
On September 1 the Kazakh Minister decreed to establish the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry as water resources are of great importance for Kazakhstan as well as oil, gas, and metals.
The draft Water Code was developed. Its main goal is to preserve the country’s water resources potential. The 2024-2030 Water Resources Management Development Concept was elaborated to increase irrigated agricultural land up to 2.2 million hectares, raise the specific share of water-efficient processes to 40% and reduce irrigation water loss.
In 2024-2026 Kazakhstan plans to build 20 new and reconstruct 15 water reservoirs. 339 channels up to 3,500 km will be rebuilt.
Kazakhstan sets up the National Hydrogeological Service to monitor and study underground water, to explore, abandon and suspend water wells. As of today, Kazakhstan explored 4,500 deposits.
This year 12 villages in Akmola region were provided with centralized water supplies, 17 more got an access to drinking water. 33 projects are being developed in Akmola, Almaty, Atyrau, Ulytau, Kyzylorda, Mangistau, Turkistan, and North Kazakhstan to provide 375 rural settlements with a population of 868,000 people with water.
