Tashkent ( WNAM REPORT ): Under the leadership and guidance of Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, a high-level Parliamentary delegation from Pakistan is participating in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), currently being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Through active engagement, strategic outreach, and sustained parliamentary diplomacy led by Chairman Senate, the Pakistani delegation made a notable mark at the global forum. On the opening day of the Assembly, three members of Pakistan’s delegation were successfully elected to key IPU committees from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group — a forum comprising 36 member countries. The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments, representing 181 member states worldwide.
These important victories are a result of Pakistan’s proactive parliamentary diplomacy, constructive engagement with member states, and the personal efforts of Chairman Senate in mobilizing support from friendly countries.
Following a robust and competitive election process, the following members of the Pakistani delegation secured positions on important IPU bodies:
1.Senator Farooq H. Naek – Re-elected for a second consecutive term to the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, in recognition of his valuable contributions to democratic governance and human rights.
2.Senator Agha Shahzaib Durrani – Elected as a member of the Bureau of Young Parliamentarians. Having previously served on this forum during his earlier Senate tenure, his election marks a significant return after a three-year gap, following his recent re-election as a Senator.
3.Barrister Aqeel Malik, MNA – Elected as a member of the High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and countering global security threats.
The leadership of Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, coupled with the united efforts of the Pakistani delegation, has once again demonstrated Pakistan’s growing influence and constructive role in the international parliamentary arena. These achievements not only highlight Pakistan’s commitment to democratic values, youth representation, and global peace but also reaffirm its active engagement in the IPU platform.
