WNAM REPORT: A week-long workshop on “undocumented and underdocumented language worlds of Pakistan” was inaugurated yesterday at Allama Iqbal Open University. Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Amir Shah, Director of Administration and Coordination at the university, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony.
Speaking on language research, Dr. Amir Shah emphasized that many regional languages are on the verge of extinction, and documenting them should be a top priority to ensure that future generations remain connected to their culture and heritage. He praised the efforts of the Department of English and the partner organization, Forum for Language Initiatives (FLI), stating that the workshop will not only enhance the skills of researchers but also open new avenues for education and research for young people.
Fakhruddin Akhunzada, Executive Director of the Forum for Language Initiatives shared his thoughts, noting the importance of preserving languages in this technological era. He added that global research efforts are ongoing, and this workshop at Allama Iqbal Open University will significantly contribute to achieving meaningful outcomes on the subject.
The workshop’s resource person, Prof. Henrik Liljegren from Stockholm University, Sweden, delivered a comprehensive presentation on research methodologies, tools, and how language documentation can be effectively carried out.
Chairman, Department of English at AIOU, Dr. Muhammad Kamal outlined the workshop’s objectives, stating that 34 research scholars from various universities across Pakistan are participating. This will provide an opportunity to understand diverse languages and cultural heritages.
The workshop is coordinated by Dr. Munir Khattak, while Dr. Rashida Imran performed the duties of stage secretary.
