ISLAMABAD (WNAM REPORT): Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Pakistan, announced that the upcoming three-day Dushanbe International Glacier Preservation Conference will be a significant step towards global environmental sustainability and water security. Scheduled for May 29-31, 2025, in Dushanbe, the conference aims to provide a roadmap for addressing climate change and water sustainability. Tajikistan, home to over 10,000 mountain glaciers, including the massive Vanch-Yakh (Fedchenko) glacier, is taking the lead in promoting glacier preservation.
The Ambassador noted that the initiative has the full support of the Government of Pakistan, which is actively participating in the conference. Participants will have the opportunity to observe glacier degradation, integrated water resources management practices, and sustainable development examples in Tajikistan during a post-conference field trip. The conference will provide a unique platform for promoting actions and sustainable measures towards preserving glaciers and integrated management at all levels.
Tajikistan’s rich history and culture are also worth noting. The territory of Tajikistan was inhabited by people even before the middle of the 1st millennium BC, who created famous ancient states such as Sogdiana and Bactria. Modern Tajikistan preserves its ancient heritage and revives traditional crafts, with many ancient cities home to skilled artisans. The Hisor Fortress, the mausoleum of Khoja Mashhad, and the remains of Buddhist monasteries from the 7th-8th centuries are just a few examples of the country’s historical landmarks.
With 93% of its territory occupied by majestic mountains, including the Tien Shan, Pamir, and Gissaro-Alai ranges, Tajikistan is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. The country looks forward to hosting international participants and stakeholders to discuss and develop recommendations for sustainable development goals and targets in water resources. Free excursions will be organized for participants to experience Tajikistan’s rich history, culture, and unique nature.
