WNAM REPORT: Indonesia hosted the 2025 Asian Regional Meeting (ARM) on the Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) initiative in Batam, Riau Islands, to foster cooperation among international vocational colleges.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at the State Polytechnic of Batam (Polibatam) on Wednesday, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto highlighted Indonesia’s long track record of producing notable innovations, according to a statement issued Thursday.
He emphasized the need for universities to apply the CDIO approach beyond classrooms to deliver greater, tangible contributions to industries.
“It is crucial for lecturers and researchers to step directly into the industrial world by engaging CEOs in discussions in order to fully grasp actual needs,” Yuliarto said.
He explained that Batam — one of Indonesia’s most prominent industrial hubs — was chosen to host the ARM to strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions, industries, and society, thereby reviving the spirit of innovation.
The minister described the international forum as valuable momentum for Indonesia to showcase that its vocational education can deliver concrete positive impacts, identify relevant solutions, and pave the way for a brighter future.
“It is in this vein that we aim to realize the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, working together to turn it from a dream into a reality within our reach,” he said.
Polibatam Director Bambang Hendrawan echoed the sentiment, calling the designation of his polytechnic as ARM host a strategic opportunity.
“We are hoping for collaboration to create remarkable innovations and changes that can help stimulate economic growth,” he said.
During his visit, Yuliarto also attended the International Project-Based Learning Expo, which showcased 196 innovative student projects from various universities.
The exhibition was part of Polibatam Technology and Innovation Week 2025, held alongside the ARM from August 18–20, which brought together academics, industry players, and communities.
The series of events drew thousands of students and participants from 13 countries.
