Islamabad (WNAM REPORT) : On Friday, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal held a press conference to outline the extensive damage caused by recent floods in Pakistan.
The minister stated that the severe floods over the past weeks have caused an estimated loss of $2.9 billion (PKR 822 billion). Agriculture suffered heavy losses of PKR 430 billion, while infrastructure damage reached PKR 307 billion, affecting over 2,811 kilometers of roads and 250 hospitals across the country.
He added that around 30–34 million bales of cotton, 10 million tons of rice, 13 million tons of sugarcane, and between 1.3 to 3.3 million tons of wheat crops were destroyed due to the floods.
Regarding housing, over 213,000 homes were destroyed in Punjab, 3,667 homes in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, 3,332 homes in Sindh, and 3,222 homes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The minister also highlighted positive economic indicators, noting that price stability has been observed in the first quarter compared to last year, and tax collections have increased by 12.5 percent.
In addition, Ahsan Iqbal mentioned Pakistan’s efforts in international diplomacy, which contributed to halting the war in Palestine and Gaza.
He assured that the government is implementing immediate relief and rehabilitation plans to assist affected communities and rebuild critical infrastructure.
