AIOU wins 1st position in Pakistan in Energy & Climate Category of UI GreenMetric Rankings 2025

WNAM REPORT: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has demonstrated outstanding performance in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, securing 8th position among all universities in Pakistan and 279th globally out of 1,745 universities. The university also achieved 2nd place among federally chartered universities. This success reflects AIOU’s sustained efforts toward sustainable development, eco-friendly initiatives, and its Green Campus vision.
On this occasion, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood stated that this year the university achieved the top position nationwide in the Energy & Climate Change category, demonstrating its commitment to clean energy usage, carbon emission reduction, and climate-resilient strategies. He emphasized that this notable achievement in UI GreenMetric is the result of the university’s institutional vision, scientific planning, and consistent adherence to environmentally friendly policies.
He further added that by prioritizing sustainability, the university has not only made its main campus more eco-friendly but is also implementing initiatives to green its regional offices.
Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Athar Khan, Director, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), explained that the UI GreenMetric ranking is based on overall performance across six key areas: Setting & Infrastructure, Energy & Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Conservation, Transportation, and Education & Research. AIOU has shown significant improvement in global rankings across all these areas compared to previous years.
He concluded that the university’s leadership, faculty, staff, and students deserve congratulations for their collective efforts, which have helped the institution take a significant step toward a sustainable future.
