WNAM REPORT: Director General Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), Major General Abdul Moeed, HI(M), visited the remote areas of Balochistan, where reports of illegal cultivation of prohibited crops had been received. Keeping in view, the outcomes of last year’s counter-narcotics campaign, this year it is being ensured that from the very beginning of illicit crops sowing season, all relevant stakeholders (federal and provincial departments) actively participate to implement a joint strategy, in a coordinated manner.
In one such move, a high-level meeting was held at Balochistan, under the chairmanship of DG ANF, which was attended by senior officers representing all departments.
During the meeting, it was decided that this year illegally cultivated crops would be eradicated at the germination stage, so that there would be no need to destroy fully grown illicit crops, at a later stage.
For the success of the campaign, joint task forces have been formed at the provincial level to ensure accurate and timely identification of areas, which are vulnerable to illegal cultivation.
These measures reflect a shift in the governmental approach and its working methodology. This year, instead of reactive eradication operations, proactive measures will be taken to eliminate illegal crops even before emergence.
It was also decided to establish an integrated checking and monitoring system so that all stakeholders, while ensuring enforcement of the law, also instill fear of crime in the minds of criminal elements.
Along with accurate and timely identification of illegal crops, the use of technology will also be ensured. Satellite imagery, agricultural drones, tractors, weedicide sprays, and other necessary agricultural equipment will be utilized.
Large-scale awareness campaigns will be conducted through media and employing state machinery. Regular interactions and jirgas will be held with local elders to create awareness about the adverse effects of illegal crops.
The DG ANF’s visit to the western remote regions of Balochistan reflects the Government of Pakistan’s strong resolve to eliminate the menace of drugs from its soil and to continue its efforts until this evil is completely eliminated.
