HÀ NỘI ( WNAM MONITORING): Eight decades of milestones, reforms and achievements of Việt Nam’s National Assembly will be showcased today in Hà Nội, tracing the legislature’s long journey and highlighting its enduring role alongside the nation’s development.
Entitled 80 years of the “Vietnamese National Assembly Accompanying the Nation”, the event is being held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the first general election to elect the National Assembly of Việt Nam, January 6, 1946–2026. It is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the National Assembly Office and the Ministry of Interior.
On January 6, 1946, responding to President Hồ Chí Minh’s call, Vietnamese citizens aged 18 and above, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion or social class, from all corners of the country went to the polls in the general election to choose the first National Assembly.
The success of that election marked a major milestone in the nation’s history, opening a new period of development for the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam, now the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam.
Over the past 80 years, the National Assembly has remained closely connected with the people, accompanying the nation through successive revolutionary stages.
Across each historical period, the legislature has been continuously strengthened and its organisation and operational methods steadily reformed, enabling it to fulfil its role as the constitutional and legislative body, decide on key national issues, exercise supreme oversight of state activities and make significant contributions to national construction, protection and development.
The exhibition will be held at Diên Hồng Hall on the third floor of the National Assembly House as part of the programme marking the 80th anniversary of the first general election.
It will vividly recreate the National Assembly’s journey of formation and development through a collection of representative images, documents and artefacts arranged in historical sequence, from the Tân Trào National Congress in 1945, the forerunner of the National Assembly, to the present-day legislature.
Each term of the National Assembly represents a significant milestone, linked to fundamental laws and historic national decisions, from the period of the war of resistance against the French under the spirit of “The Nation Above All” to the eras of peace, reunification, reform and international integration.
The exhibition also highlights the comprehensive growth and development of the NA as the highest legislative body, operating in an increasingly professional, democratic, open, transparent and effective manner. It affirms the NA’s central role and position in the political system as a firm bridge between the Communist Party, the State and the people.
Through the event, the organising committee hopes to contribute to educating about patriotic traditions, fostering national pride and strengthening confidence in the country’s development path under the leadership of the Party.
It is expected to reach a wide audience of voters and the public, particularly the younger generation, by conveying the mission of the NA as Việt Nam’s highest state power body and the highest representative body of the people.
On this occasion, a documentary exhibition titled Vietnamese National Assembly – An 80-Year Journey of Construction and Development opened at the National Library of Việt Nam in Hà Nội on January 5.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyễn Xuân Dũng, director of the National Library of Việt Nam, said that drawing on its profound historical significance, the exhibition was organised to honour the great historical, political and legal values of the Vietnamese National Assembly.
The exhibition features nearly 800 documents selected from the National Library’s extensive collection and is organised into four main sections.
Through the application of digital technology, visitors can explore the exhibition in a variety of visual and engaging formats, take part in interactive activities and search for information conveniently and flexibly.
