ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Chairman of the Pakistan Alternative Energy Association, Asif Javed, has expressed serious concern over the government’s policy shift from net metering to net billing. He said that this change could lead to financial losses for both residential and commercial consumers. He warned that limiting the benefits of net metering may slow down the growth of renewable energy in the country, which could negatively impact efforts to address the energy crisis and achieve environmental goals.
He stated that under the net metering system, consumers were provided with a relatively better facility to sell their surplus electricity to the grid, resulting in a noticeable reduction in electricity bills. However, under the net billing system, surplus electricity is likely to be purchased at lower rates, which may discourage investment in solar energy. He urged the government to create a balanced policy through transparent consultation with stakeholders so that consumer confidence can be restored and the promotion of solar energy continues.
