WNAM REPORT: The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), convened a high-level academic delegation to Kohinoor Textile Mills Ltd (KTML) today. The initiative, titled “Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Academia-Industry Synergies,” aimed to transform traditional industry-university relations into a dynamic engine for economic growth and technical research.
Distinguished Participants
The delegation was led by M. Adnan Mukhtar, Chairman of the ICCI Standing Committee on HEC & Industrial Academia Linkages, alongside ICCI Conveners Dr. Usman (Software) and Aizaz Muhammad (IT & Hardware). Senior HEC officials Ms. Uzma and Ahmed Gulzar Kiani participated alongside a robust cohort of Directors of ORIC, Deans, and Department Heads from Pakistan’s premier institutions:
- CUST University:Air Cmdr Afzaal Ahmed
- Air University:Air Cmdr Fawad Zahir
- NUST:Fawad Khan
- FAST-NU:Rana Ayaz
- PIEAS: Shazia Bashir
- NUTECH:Air Cmdr Irfan & Brig Mudassir Hussain
- Additional leadershipfrom NUML, STMU, Hi-Tech University, IIUI, Rawalpindi Women University, Fatima Jinnah Women University, and Meezan School System.
Strategic Objectives & Industrial Insights
Hosted by Mr. Ali Nawaz, Head of HR at KTML, the delegation conducted a deep-dive analysis of large-scale spinning, weaving, and dyeing operations. Unlike standard industrial visits, this engagement focused on:
- Operational Problem Solving:Identifying technical bottlenecks in dyeing and printing where university R&D can provide localized solutions.
- Sustainable Engineering:Reviewing KTML’s biomass energy and water reclamation systems as case studies for academic environmental research.
- Technical Integration:Aligning university lab capabilities with the practical, high-output requirements of the textile sector.

The Way Forward: A New Collaborative Framework
- Adnan Mukhtaremphasized that ICCI is pivoting toward a result-oriented roadmap that moves past ceremonial interactions to solve core industrial challenges.
Core Challenges for Universities:
- Curriculum Realignment:Universities must address the mismatch between theoretical education and the high-tech, automated realities of modern textile production.
- Applied Research:Shifting academic focus from purely theoretical publications to “problem-solving” R&D that directly impacts industrial efficiency.
Opportunities for the Chamber & Industry:
- Production Unit Access:ICCI will continue to open doors for faculty and researchers to explore specialized production units, allowing for real-time data collection and industrial auditing.
- Future Collaboration:The roadmap includes structured faculty placements, joint technical consultancy, and the creation of “Industry-Academia Innovation Hubs” to localize the production of spare parts and chemicals.
This visit serves as a blueprint for ICCI’s mission to integrate Pakistan’s intellectual capital with its industrial powerhouse, ensuring a more competitive and technologically advanced national economy.
