WNAM MONITORING: At least nine people were killed Wednesday evening in an attack by unidentified armed assailants on a mining project site in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, local officials said.
The attack targeted a copper and gold project site in the Chagai district, Dawn reported Thursday, citing a statement from National Resources Limited.
The company said security forces, including the Frontier Corps, responded quickly, secured the area and launched a clearance operation.
While the company did not initially report casualties, local authorities later confirmed that nine people were killed.
“At least nine employees, including two security guards, were killed,” a senior Chagai administration official said on condition of anonymity. Police officials also confirmed the attack and the death toll.
