WNAM MONITORING: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday told his US counterpart Marco Rubio that Taiwan is the biggest risk in Beijing-Washington ties.
Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi conveyed the message during a phone call with Rubio, according to a statement posted by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on US social media company X.
“Taiwan question bears on China’s core interests and is the biggest risk in China-U.S. relations. The U.S. side should honor its commitments and make the right choice, to open up new space for China-U.S. cooperation and make due efforts for world peace,” Wang said.
He emphasized that relations between China and the United States have remained broadly stable under the strategic guidance of their leaders, describing head-of-state diplomacy as the “anchor” of bilateral ties.
He said maintaining this stability serves the interests of both nations and aligns with global expectations.
The Chinese diplomat also pushed for increased cooperation and improved conflict resolution, suggesting that both sides should work toward establishing a “strategic, constructive, and stable” relationship based on mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Wang Yi’s remarks came amid ongoing geopolitical friction between the two powers, with Taiwan continuing to be a central point of contention in broader discussions over security, sovereignty, and regional stability.
It comes ahead of US President Donald Trump’s scheduled trip to China on May 14 and 15, according to the White House, though Beijing has not confirmed the dates yet.
Also, this was the first public call between the two top diplomats since the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28.
