BEIJING ( WNAM REPORT): China called for the early restoration of safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran said it would review requests for vessel transit through the strategic waterway once the regional security situation stabilizes.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a daily news briefing in response to a question about Iran’s latest announcement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, following another wave of exchanges of strikes involving the United States.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a strait for international navigation,” Lin said. “Resuming safe and free passage in the Strait at an early date serves the interests of all sides.”
Lin said a proper settlement is needed to address issues concerning passage through the Strait of Hormuz and to respond to concerns shared by the international community.
“China stands ready to maintain communication on this with relevant countries and the international community,” he said.
It is worth mentioning that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
