ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Pakistan stands alert as World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the emergence of a new strain of Mpox as a global emergency, according to Ministry of Health spokesperson Sajid Hussain Shah.
In response to the situation, a special meeting focusing on preparedness against Mpox is being held at the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) under the directives of Dr Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Health.
According to Dr Mukhtar, so far there have been no reported cases of this new strain of Mpox in Pakistan. He has also issued instructions for all airports across the country to remain on high alert concerning Mpox. Border health services have been put on high alert to ensure rigorous screening at all entry points into the country. “We are strengthening screening systems at internal routes and ensuring that all airports have effective screening measures in place,” he stated.
The health authorities in Pakistan are committed to implementing the recommendations set forth by the international health regulations to safeguard the public from potential outbreaks. The Ministry of Health, along with Border Health Services, is prepared to tackle any unforeseen emergencies.
Dr. Mukhtar highlighted that public health laboratories at both national and provincial levels are well-equipped to confirm Mpox virus cases and are closely monitoring the situation. “Outbreaks know no borders,” he said, emphasizing the need for urgent action and preparedness to protect the population.
In light of these developments, federal hospitals have been urged to take preventive measures to mitigate the risk of Mpox spreading within the country. As the situation evolves, the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring the safety and health of its citizens.
So far more than 17,000 suspected cases of Mpox have been reported in African countries, resulting in 517 deaths across 13 nations.
